Surprise Gifts from Dead People
You’ve just received a letter from an attorney representing the estate of a recently-deceased gentleman who was a longtime, generous supporter of your charity. The will includes a provision for a gift of $100,000 to your organization. There’s a catch, however. The bequest is to be used to establish a charitable gift annuity to benefit the sister of the decedent; this is known as a testamentary charitable gift annuity. What do you do now?

QUICK TIP: Your Donor’s Vote Counts (Discount Rate Election)
The IRS allows the donor’s charitable income tax deduction for a life income gift arrangement to be based on either the IRS discount rate for the month of the gift, or the discount rate for one of the two previous months. But did you know that if one of the alternate rates is used, the IRS requires the donor to file an IRS Discount Rate Election Statement along with his or her tax return?!
You can make this easy for your donor with Planned Giving Manager. Select the IRS Discount Rate Election Statement under Narratives in the Presentation Selection window and then print it with your other documents. The one-page document contains both the form and filing instructions for the donor. More details and samples on the PG Calc Blog.

PG Calc Introduces PGM Anywhere at ACGA Conference
Attendees at this year’s American Council on Gift Annuities Conference in Baltimore got an extra bonus - an early look at PGM Anywhere. We were thrilled with how excited clients (and non-clients!) were when they saw it.
PGM Anywhat??? PGM Anywhere is our new, browser-based planned giving calculations and proposal software. It’s optimized for use on iPads and Android tablets, but works equally well on your Windows PC or Mac. Wherever you are – at home, on the road, with a donor – all you need is an internet connection to produce planned giving illustrations with just a few finger taps. What’s more, because PGM Anywhere is browser-based, you can start a case on your office computer and finish on your laptop or tablet. Work wherever and however is most convenient for you.
The beta release of PGM Anywhere handles the most commonly-used functions of Planned Giving Manager, and we anticipate an official release with even greater functionality in early June. At that time, all current Planned Giving Manager, Mini Manager, and Gift Annuity Manager clients will be able to run the new software – for free! If you don’t want to wait till then to experience PGM Anywhere, we’d love to get your feedback as a beta user. Contact Bill Laskin (617-497-4970 x1201) for details.

Update: Significant Changes To Wisconsin Gift Annuity Regulation
As promised, we’ve been keeping an eye on legislation in Wisconsin relating to regulation of gift annuities. That legislation (2013 Wisconsin Act 271, Senate Bill 152) has been adopted and became effective April 18, 2014. With its enactment, it is no longer necessary for charities to register with, or submit annual reports to, the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. However, a charity must still comply with certain requirements. Read all the details on the PG Calc Blog. NOTE: A small update to our Planned Giving Manager software will be released within a week to accommodate the changes in Wisconsin. Please contact support@pgcalc.com or 888-474-2252 with questions.

MARKETING CORNER: More than the Sum of the Parts I’ll admit it. A big part of my love for marketing is a love of design. The connection between the two holds a lesson for planned giving marketers. The next time you create marketing materials for your program, don’t just tell your audience about the parts. Make a compelling whole.

Martha & Mary Lutheran Services: PG Calc "Our First Choice for Planned Giving Counsel”
Paula Rimmer, Director of Development at Martha & Mary Lutheran Services, explained her decision to use PG Calc:
We are a 123-year old senior housing and healthcare and child care organization in the state of Washington. An unexpected and very generous planned gift from a former Board member spurred us to establish a planned giving program. I worked with PG Calc previously, and they were my first choice when seeking planned giving counsel.
I knew it would provide us with the process and guidance we needed: first to engage our trustees and senior leadership, and then to help us create a sustainable program for marketing, securing, and stewarding planned gifts. PG Calc is the perfect choice to help us develop the planned giving program that’s right for our donors, that’s manageable within our resources, and that can expand to support our success.)
The opportunity to learn from the experts at PG Calc at my previous organization was invaluable and built up my confidence and skills as a gift planner. I’m excited that Martha & Mary and the seniors, children, and families we serve will now benefit from the company’s expertise, as well.
