IRS DISCOUNT RATE: October 1.0%

Non-Deductible Gifts That Save Taxes Anyway

Gift planners have become adept at explaining the tax advantages of Qualified Charitable Distributions, even though there is no income tax charitable deduction involved. But are there advantages for other non-deductible charitable contributions?

Perhaps surprisingly, the answer is yes! Especially these days, with fewer taxpayers itemizing than ever, it is helpful to be prepared to discuss non-deductible contributions with prospective donors.

In this article, we will review three options for charitable gift planning without an income tax charitable deduction:

  • Contributions of appreciated property from non-itemizers,
  • Gifts of services, and
  • Contributions of ordinary income property.

Quick Tip: GiftWrap and Bequest Manager Reports – Where Did Those Numbers Come From?

GiftWrap and Bequest Manager reporting is powerful. There are times, however, when clients have difficulty reproducing report results or reconciling results between reports. A couple of simple tips can help.

First, it is essential to always preserve the final page of any report, namely the selection and sort criteria page. Sometimes, a discrepancy between reports is resolved by making sure the selection and sort criteria match. Another aid is the date displayed on the bottom of each report page; this is the date the report was produced. Knowing when a report was generated can help trace differences to when data changes were made.

Many clients find it useful to export reports to the Raw Data format (.CSV format) for analysis in Excel. However, the raw data export format lacks a record of the selection criteria that might help explain the results. We recommend that you produce a PDF version of the report in the same run as the raw data and that you save the two reports as a pair. The PDF documents the selection and sort criteria used to create the report, as well as the date the report was produced. This simple step can help avoid frustration whenever attempting to understand report results.

From the PG Calc Blog: A Gift Annuity Is Not a Mortgage

We occasionally receive calls from clients regarding questions about the best way to perform internal accounting for charitable gift annuities. As a split-interest charitable gift arrangement, the CGA represents both a gift to the charity and a financial obligation to the annuitant(s). On this much, there is general consensus, but on the manner in which the charity should compute the estimated remaining liability for each CGA over time, there are two main approaches.

New York State Rate Calcs Service

PG Calc NY Rate Calcs Service Now Includes Deferred Gift Annuities

Last month, we announced PG Calc’s new NY Rate Calcs Service for computing the maximum annuity rate allowed New York donors who fund a two-life immediate gift annuity or a one-life or two-life deferred gift annuity. We noted then that we were able to compute New York maximum rates for two-life immediate gift annuities and expected to be able to do the same for one-life and two-life deferred gift annuities soon. We are pleased to confirm that just a few days after sending the last eRate, we did, indeed, add computing New York maximum rates for one-life and two-life deferred gift annuities to our capabilities.

This service is necessary because the maximum annuity rates allowed by New York currently are lower than the suggested maximum rates published by the American Council on Gift Annuities for many annuitant ages, and New York publishes only its maximum one-life rates.

If you are working with a New York donor who wishes to fund a two-life immediate gift annuity, or a one-life or two-life deferred gift annuity, contact us. We will determine the maximum annuity rate you can offer your donor.

Go to www.pgcalc.com to learn more about our service or to submit a calculation request form.

It’s Not Too Late to Add Punch to Your Fall Gift Annuity Mailing

Fall mailings make September and October our busiest time of year for BatchCalcs. Consider using BatchCalcs in your next gift annuity mailing!

BatchCalcs is PG Calc’s service that enables you to include personalized gift annuity calculations in each email message or print letter. Some clients include just the annuity rate the prospect would get. Others enclose a Summary of Benefits chart that displays the prospect’s charitable deduction, annuity amount, and how their annuity would be taxed. All we need from you is an Excel file with a birth date or age and an ID for each prospect. You can include target gift amounts, too. You get back your Excel file with calculated values added and, if you wish, a file of letters or Summary of Benefits charts with values merged into them.

If you want to use BatchCalcs to add punch to your gift annuity mailing or just want to learn more about it, please contact Dave Wolfe at dwolfe@pgcalc.com or call 888-497-4970.
