IRS DISCOUNT RATE: October 0.4%

Taking a Closer Look at QCDs

Qualified charitable distributions (QCDs), also known as charitable IRA rollovers, are particularly appealing to donors because they provide a tax benefit whether or not the donor itemizes deductions.

While on the surface they seem simple – request a payment go directly from the plan administrator to a qualifying charity – there are nuances to these types of gifts of which charities should be aware.

Let’s take a closer look at some of those subtleties as they relate to QCD requirements.

Quick Tip: GiftWrap’s CashTrac Computes the Ongoing Value of Each and Every Gift Annuity

In PG Calc’s GiftWrap application, under the CashTrac function, a charitable organization may use either of two methods to compute individual market values for all gift annuities: one is by applying an overall net rate of investment return, and the other is by using a specific market value for the entire gift annuity pool.

CashTrac Screen Capture

Why the two different methods? The second method is by far the more popular choice – in most cases, the ending market values are easily obtained, and this method also allows for breaking out interest/dividends, fees/expenses, and gains/losses separately. But the first method is helpful when the organization has unusual investment arrangements. Moreover, it is especially helpful when individual market values have never been computed, and the charity has to go back many years in time to “catch up.”

PG Calc will help you decide which method is more appropriate for your program and your circumstances, and we will help to walk you through the process until you become familiar with it. Don’t hesitate to contact us – we are here to help!

Please contact Client Services at 888-474-2252 or support@pgcalc.com if you would like to learn more about using CashTrac in GiftWrap.

BatchCalcs Makes Fall Mailings More Compelling

In preparation for year-end giving, many of our clients send out a gift annuity mailing in the fall. If you are among those, our BatchCalcs service can help. PG Calc’s BatchCalcs service allows you to personalize the gift annuity benefits for each recipient of your mailing with their own annuity rate and charitable deduction. All we need is a spreadsheet of birth dates or ages and a few days to do the work, and we’ll return all the information you need. We can even create a merged file of letters or Summary of Benefits charts with names, numbers, and addresses merged in, if you wish.

A customized, personal message is more compelling. Use our BatchCalcs in your gift annuity mailing to generate more qualified prospects and get more gifts.

Call Dave Wolfe at 888-497-4970 for more information.

The Society of the Little Flower Benefits from PG Calc's Services

The Society of the Little Flower was founded in 1923 by the religious order of Carmelites, and is named after its patron saint, Thérèse of Lisieux. Thérèse is one of the most popular saints in the Catholic tradition, and her spirituality has changed the lives of millions since her passing in 1897 at the age of 24. Today, the Society has a membership of almost 300,000 benefactors, who support its activities of spiritual formation on its campus in Darien, Illinois, as well as Carmelite ministries around the world. It has a robust direct mail program, along with a multi-faceted planned giving outreach, major gifts effort, and social media presence.

Dan Pritchard, Special Gifts Officer for the Society, recently spoke about his long-term relationship with PG Calc:

"Having worked in the planned giving arena for almost 30 years, I have become familiar with a number of vendors who support charities’ fundraising activities. Many do a fine job, but I have been most impressed with the array of products offered by PG Calc. Their planned giving software programs are both well known and highly respected, as is their marketing, training and website services. Much more than that, though, it is their commitment to building a relationship with their clients that stands out. They are always at the ready to answer a technical question or coach a planned giving officer through a complicated gift arrangement. Most recently, the training related to their latest product, PGM Anywhere has been quite helpful.

"A charity in search of a company to partner with as it grows its planned giving program can’t go wrong by turning to PG Calc: their staff and services are second to none."
